I recently followed up a presentation on Managing Complexity in Software Projects with a talk at the Montana Programmers’ Conference on how cognitive biases interact with complexity. I am glad to see more posts on the subject lately (probably due to a cognitive bias), including this one:

“Human logic, unlike that of the machines which we program and use every day, isn’t perfect. We make mistakes, we establish bad mental habits, and we have many cognitive biases that negatively impact our ability to be successful engineers. I want to go over five of the most common biases that I see on a regular basis as a software engineer.”

I recommend the five minute read here: http://www.jonathanklein.net/2013/06/cognitive-biases-in-software-engineering.html

Collections

Collectors are often seen as selfish people who want to own things without giving anything in return. On the contrary, I think that collectors are great philanthropists. They pick up and arrange things, building small, perfect and accomplished worlds of the neglected past, thus gaining valuable knowledge. They are well aware of the fact that what they own will not be theirs forever, because as time goes by others will follow. Intact collections are important for future generations, they represent a real gift to them. And that alone is enough to justify the financial sacrifices and squandering that a collector must bear. “ Serge Brignoni, 1989

Long days and pleasant nights to you.

I’m a bit nervous when I try a new service and like it, then find out that I can’t pay for it. I worry that it will either be sold to someone and change fundamentally, or just cease to exist. I hope Svbtle stays around for a while. @Svbtle, if you need a few more bucks a month in your budget, please let me pay you.
